Well…it finally happened

Someone walked in on me while I was pumping at work. Oh the horror! Even though my door was locked. And my curtain was pulled shut. (You can read about my pumping at work process here). I knew it was bound to happen eventually. But still. No one ever comes in to my office if the door is closed and locked…unless it’s the cleaning staff (who know better to go in when I’m in there!). Leave it up to the IT person and some random dude from the phone company to be the culprits. I think they were just as shocked as I was. And the worst part? They just stood there in my doorway! I had to ask yell at them THREE times to shut the door. I totally don’t think they saw anything because as soon as the door opened I bent down so I was covered by my desk. But still.
I don’t know about you, but I feel way more vulnerable and exposed while pumping than I do actually nursing my baby. You sort of feel helpless…tied up to a machine with your goods on display. Has this happened to anyone else?
In other, more happy news, I’m guest posting for my girl Britt (who just welcomed her sweet little girl, Scarlett) over at The Magnolia Pair today! I’m getting all mushy talking about how much I love being a mama. I would love it if you would check it out and leave some love!

I can only imagine the horror! I am still so impressed on your committment to pumping and sharing it with all of us. And just like men to just stare and not know what to do…

I am so worried about this! It's one of the reasons I keep my nursing cover in my pump bag!

I think it's time you change the sign to "I'm pumping my boobs. DO NOT COME IN!"

Also, maybe a LOCK! Who disregards a sign like that?! Ergh!

YES! It happened to me when I was in a LOCKED office with a note on the door that clearly said "Do Not Disturb." It was another employee who had a key. Ugh.

Oh no! I want to smack those guys for standing there, even if just confused and dumbfounded, definitely makes an already dreadful process more awful!

Not to blame it all on MEN, but seriously? They're so oblivious!

This has happened to me at home when I was nursing. I was in the dining room and someone came in to grab something from the table and didn't even realize I was pumping. It was awkward because we had a bunch of people over and they were all in the kitchen, which is right off the dining room.

Not matter how much you announce it some people will never listen!

OMG!!!! I thought it was bad enough when family walked in on me pumping in my own home…I can only imagine what this was like for you!!! I'm sorry 🙁

my FIRST day back at work one of my co-workers walked in. The door was locked and he HAD A KEY. It was SO awkward. So then my boss had to go around to every employee and tell them that if the door is closed to stay away.

Ugh! That was always my biggest fear! I had trouble getting a let down because I was so stressed and edgy when I pumped at work. I started always sitting with my back to the door, and someone did walk into the locked office once, but heard me yell and shut the door before they saw anything! So awkward! Sorry lady!

HA! What Christina @ Carolina Charm said! I cannot believe that happened & that you had to TELL them not ONCE but, THREE times to get out! Some people really do amaze me!

Pumping at work is the hardest…I have been walked in on twice so far! I pump in a storage closet and a man who wanted to refill the supplies walked in!!! So embarrassing. I actually think he was more embarrassed than I was because he stood there for a minute and didn't realize what was going on! I feel for ya!

Oh no!!!! Someone almost walked in on me and I had to ask them not to come in. :S It was so embarrassing. I feel WAY more exposed when I'm pumping, too.

  17. Jen says

So sorry this happened to you! I was stressed and nervous that people could hear my pump and that they would come in any minute (even with a locked door).

I'm so sorry! That must have been so embarrassing. What a bunch of dopes to just stand there! And to walk right past the giant sign. DUH.

My door at the office doesn't lock and I was constantly in fear someone would disregard my sign and come in. I would shove a chair in front of the door it made me so nervous. Someone (I think I know who) also liked to knock on my door while I was pumping, just to be an ass and not to ask for anything. The person I think did that also walked in on another girl while pumping. Some people!

  20. Sarah @ Life, Love & Dinner says

Oh, the horror! This is my greatest fear, especially since I work in a middle school!

  21. Whitney says

    April 30, 2013 at 4:54 pm

My door at work doesn't lock so when I went back to work I made sure everyone knew that if the door was closed…DO NOT try to come in. Then, just in case, I put a chair in front of the door. Thankfully I work with pretty much all women, so it wasn't too big of a deal and somehow I made it through with no one bothering me! 🙂 You might try the chair trick…unless your door opens outwards, then I don't know what else you could do!

Oh my!! I can't imagine!! That had to be the worst. We have an actual lactation room on our floor, so hopefully one day when I'm in your situation, I can go there and won't be disturbed. But it's still such an awkward situation with male co-workers around. I'm so sorry!!

  23. Nat says

AHhh!!! Isn't it awful?! I was in my hotel room when the bellboy knocked on the door and Ryan totally forgot that I was pumping and just swung the door wide open and I was like BAAAAAABE!!! I was mortified and the bellboy was totally shocked. So awful!!

  25. Anonymous says

    April 30, 2013 at 7:55 pm

Yep, happened to me. It was a coworker and the door was locked with a do not disturb sign. I think she was more embarassed than I was.

Oh nooooooo. That would be awful!! so so embarrassing. I'm not sure of much more you could do with locking your door and the sign. Hopefully it doesn't happen again!
