I think Wrigley knows something’s up.
He knows that mama doesn’t wrestle with him as much. And that several months ago she was really tired all the time. He knows it’s harder for me to give him a bath….not that he’s complaining about that one.
In the past few months he’s become much more protective…barking at people who walk by the house and at strangers on our walks. It could be that he’s just growing up….but I think he knows there is a baby on the way. And nobody better mess with Wrigley’s baby.
Do you know what a pregnant girl who has a dog should NEVER do?
Watch Lady and the Tramp. Trust me on this. You may think it’s harmless but let me remind you of the plot, in case you forgot like I did. It’s not all Italian love songs and shared plates of spaghetti.

Lady has a wonderful life. She is the center of Jim Dear and Darling’s world. And then they have a baby. And she is confused and neglected. And she gets caught up with the wrong crowd and ends up in the pound. Oh. My. Word. I cried. Actual tears were shed over this movie! And I immediately took Wrigley to the dog park! Please learn from my mistake and keep your pregnancy hormones far far away from this movie!
I haven’t neglected Wrigley by any means….but I don’t want him to feel left out. He was our first real baby and is the center of everything in our house. I hope when the baby comes he still knows how much we love him. I can’t wait to see him with our little guy and have no doubt in my mind Wrigley will love him just as much as we do!
Oh boy! I totally forgot the plot behind lady and the tramp! Our pup is out first baby too and hopefully we can keep a good mix of attention for both of them:)
Oooh! This made me a little sad. I'm sure W will know he is still loved by you two, but be prepared for not only spiked curiousity, but some jealousy. Our cat hissed whenever she got the slightest scent of Connor, but has since gotten MUCH better! She smells him and kinda checks on him when he's crying by peaking over the crib or pack n play. There will just be a transitions period, that's all. Until then, give him as much 'extra' love as you can 🙂
In at least one of Cesar Millan's books he gives great advice on how to transition your dog from a dog only home to a home with a baby. Check it out!
I thought this was such a cute post! You have a beautiful dog! I am sure you'll make sure not to neglect him! I never got Lady & the Tramp until I was an adult haha.
Oh goodness…this movie made me cry when I wasn't pregnant…I can only imagine what this movie will do to me now! I keep thinking about what life will be like for Ace in our house with a baby…I hope he knows how much we love him and will continue to love him, even with a newborn! And I think he can sense that something is different with me, too. He doesn't bring me his ball to throw anymore…he goes directly to my husband!
I'm not even pregnant and I worry about this. I know so many people who have gotten rid of their pets as soon as they have a baby and it makes my heart so sad. I'm glad you are already preparing to make your pup continue to feel loved despite the changes that are coming. Love that!
Noted… will not watch the movie. We just found out we are due in March. I have a golden as well who is the center of our world!
aww, animals are so smart. they know much more than we could ever imagine.
i'm with Allison above. so many people have gotten rid of their pups/kittens when they had their baby and i just can't imagine it.
they are our babies. our loves. our family.
so happy that you feel the way you do and that you are determined to make sure that pup continues to feel loved.
Aww Wrigley! I can see how that movie would make you emotional! I got a little emotional reading your post and I'm not even preg! Must be a mama dog lover thing. 🙂
That first pic is TOO cute. And I just teared up thinking about watching Lady and the Tramp. Bailey is the same way…she totally knows something is up and it makes me feel SO guilty!
OH MY GOODNESS! I don't think Wrigley has anything to worry about. You're a great puppy mom, and you'll be a great puppy and human mom!! 🙂
That movie scarred me for life! I'm not kidding. I even cried reading this! I bet he was so happy to go to the park, and he will love his baby so much when baby comes! I love that you love him so much!!!
I forgot about the plot of lady and the tramp!!! And I promise wrigley knows what's up- and loves the baby already! He has two of you to protect now. And he'll be so happy when he gets his playful mama back!
Aww Wrigley! I'm not pregnant but, have thought of this many times for when I am! I always want Bingham to know how much we love him & that he'll always be our first child! I think Wrigley is going to make a great "big brother"!
This is too cute! And you are right, I DID forget the plot! Wrigley has nothing to worry about, y'all are great fur parents 😀
I love that movie and have no doubt you will always keep Wrigley from feeling neglected! Plus, he has his kitty friends to keep him company 🙂
Oh my gosh!! WAIT until you have the baby! We feel SO bad that Wilson isn't getting the attention he used to…and I IMMEDIATELY thought of Lady and the Tramp! We've been letting Ryan's parents take him for play dates during the day so he gets attention, but it is pretty darn sad. His bed even got moved to the other room and he is SOO sad about it! We can't wait to get the stroller attachment so we can take baby and Wilson on walks soon! But man, you nailed this post!! EEK!
Aww, Wrigley, what a total shugpie. Look at how precious he looks in that first photo. So sweet.
Aww I never remember the plot behind Lady & the Tramp either.
I think Wrigley is going to be great with the baby, and he will be just as loved then as he always has been 🙂
I definitely agree on dogs sensing things – I think our two pups have started picking up on things. Our little dog lays on my stomach now more than she ever has.
ps that picture of Wrigley is so cute, he's got such a great face!
Dogs are just so so smart about stuff like that. I feel like dogs do so well with babies and fit so nicely together. I'm sure Wrigley will continue to be protective and will be super sweet with the baby.
