Hudson’s Kitchen: Before and After

 photo IMG_4816.jpg
As you may recall, Hudson got this adorable kitchen from Santa for Christmas. He LOVES it! I know a play kitchen isn’t the usual present for a little boy, but Hudson loves playing in our kitchen and gets a kick out of spatulas and bowls….so I knew he would love his present.

We scored this kitchen for FREE several months ago….as soon as I spotted it I knew it had the potential to be really cute….all it needed was a little makeover!

photo IMG_3792.jpgOf course I waited 6 months to even start working on it….I am the worst procrastinator ever. I do not recommend painting when it’s snowing outside….totally not fun. But totally worth it. My mom and I took off the doors and hardware and gave everything several coats of red spray paint and painted the inside white. I also sprayed all of the knobs and handles silver and painted the back splash and side of the refrigerator with chalkboard paint. Total cost was about $15.

 photo IMG_4838.jpg
I LOVE how it turned out! It will need a few touch ups when it’s warmer outside, but for now, it totally works.

 photo IMG_4837.jpg
There were lots of painted on buttons and numbers for the microwave and stove on the original kitchen. I was going to try and paint them back on but decided I kind of like the simpler version better. Also, instead of painting on the burners for the stove I just picked up some round pieces of wood at Joann’s Fabric, spray painted them silver, and had my husband glue them on.

 photo IMG_4834.jpg
Of course we needed lots of fun play food to go with the fabulous kitchen! I might have gone a little overboard…..we picked up these Melissa and Doug wooden condiment set that has quickly become a favorite of both me and Hudson. The lids are magnetic and the whole set is just too cute for words. It’s also solved the problem of Hudson always wanting to play with our real ketchup bottle!

photo IMG_4836.jpgThe buckets of food by color that you see in several of the photos are the Farmer’s Market Color Sorting set by Learning Resources. Each basket (red, green, purple, orange, yellow) is filled with five different foods that are the same color….the quality is amazing and I know when Hudson gets a little older it will help him learn his colors. I also bought him the New Sprouts Bake It set which he loves scooping the cookies on and off of the baking sheet and putting the cupcakes in the tin.

photo IMG_4859.jpgBack in November I spotted a New Sprouts breakfast, lunch, and dinner set (same set can be found here) at Costco for a steal but didn’t buy it…the next week I went back to get it and it was gone. So sad! After posting it on instagram one of my friends was on the lookout each time she went to Costco and finally spotted a set that must have been returned and picked it up for us. We love it and it came with so much food! So if you ever see something at Costco that you want, buy it right away! (also, dump trucks play in our kitchen too!)

photo IMG_4873.jpgHudson loves his kitchen and I’m sure it will get lots and lots of love over the next few years!

Awesome job on the kitchen re-do! It looks PERFECT for Hudson now!! And I'm glad you scored that Costco play set! Although I have to admit some of the food is SO random… But that hasn't stopped lex from loving it too!

My cousin & I had a McDonald's play set & we played with it for years! I don't think there's anything wrong with a kitchen for a boy either! Great score & make-over!! I think it's all so cute & the perfect Christmas gift!!

Adorable – what a great makeover. The best part is that you didn't have to assemble it yourself. My sister spend over four hours assembling the kitchen we got B for Christmas. NIGHTMARE. I bet Hudson will enjoy this for years to come!

Fantastic job on the kitchen remodel! I love the colors you picked and the way you made it seem like a real deal kitchen for him! And the chalkboard paint on the back splash and fridge are a perfect addition!!

You did great! Carter got a kitchen for Christmas too, but it's nowhere near as cool as one with chalkboard paint! 🙂 Love all of your food accessories…I may have to pick some up for our little man. I wanted to be sure he was going to play with his kitchen before I splurged on all kinds of extras.

So so darling!! I knew Ethan would love a kitchen set too…I mean, he already loves sweeping and vacuuming, may as well go with it! Love all the mini food too!

Too cute!! You did such a good job! Cam LOVES to be in the kitchen with us (Chad is a cook, so I guess it's in his genes!), so a kitchen has been on MY wishlist for quite some time. I am thinking it will make a nice "house warming" gift once we move this summer! Great job, Momma!

You did an AWESOME job! It doesn't even look like the same little kitchen after the re-do! In fact, the colors and style really remind me of the much pricier Pottery Barn kitchens for kids:) I love the simple silver accents. LOVE the chalkboard walls. Great, great, great! Hudson will play with it for years:)
