I gave up on reading Water for Elephants. I got about a third of the way through it, but then just couldn’t bring myself to keep going. I desperately wanted to like this book…but I just didn’t. The whole time I was reading it I was on edge. I was either worried that I would have to read about any mis-treatment of animals or I was depressed about all the sad stuff in there about growing old. You know it’s a bad sign when you don’t look forward to reading your book. I read a few words during my lunch break yesterday and finally said “enough”. And I read a magazine instead.
So tell me, did you like this book? Maybe I can give it a chance later…but right now I just can’t handle it!
I need some other books to read…what are you reading right now? The Book Thief and Shutter Island have both been recommended to me so they are up next on my list…but after that? I have no clue!
I knew it! LOL I've had like 5 other bloggers say the book was just so slow and they couldn't get into it!!! And the few that say oh it's wonderful! bahhhhh I'm going with it's slow and not worth buying hopefully the movie will make it way better!
this book is either a "love it or hate it"…i only bought bc the movie is coming out soon. i probably have less than 100 pages left and it's been sitting on my nightstand for almost a month waiting for me to finish it. but i'm not a good reader. once i had a book sit on my nightstand for a whole year before i finished it.
if i EVER finish it…i'll let you know how it goes.
I loved this book but I can see your points. I thought it such a beautiful story – the good and the bad.
Although if we can talk Movie no way Reese should be playing Marlena.
Oh, that is always dissapointing! I have been in such a reading-rut lately. I can't seem to finish one book I start and I have no idea what's wrong with me. This was up next on my list. I might have to give it a whirl, but I hope I pick up something I finally enjoy!
uh oh. i was going to read that next!!! i just got done with steve martin's book (about art) it was REALLY good. and right now i'm onto one about a girl who dies and keeps reliving the day. do you like how i know all the titles?
I loved this book! I love animals but just loved the story in general and didn't find it slow at all. I'm not sure if that's because the book I read before was about a serial killer and I wanted something a little less violent lol who knows!
Oh no!! I am with you, I HATED hearing about the mistreatment of all the animals and the grungy life that those people lived. Ky's cousin actually owns an animal sanctuary in Texas where they take in abused/injured animals and one of the elephants was from a circus… so sad. After we visited there, we've always said we would never take our kids to a circus, never support that. HOWEVER the end of the book was a happy ending for all, which helped a little!
OH NO! I JUST bought this book last night! LOL Hopefully I like it… hahahahaha
Julie – I did the same exact thing! I got to the part where they started talking about cruelty to horses and I just closed it for good.
I haven't read this book and I have to say the movie preview didn't offer much on a plot about it.
I do however love the "series" by Emily Griffin (the first "Something Borrowed" is going to be a movie coming out this year).
I haven't read the book, but the movie looks good. Maybe that's just because I like Reese Witherspoon. Hopefully it's better than the book though!
I have to say, I loved the book. But I completely understand giving up on a book you dread reading. I just did that with 100 Years of Solitude. It's a classic but I just couldn't connect with it. I was not enjoying it at all and it was ruining reading for me. I finally decided (nearly 180 pages in) to give up and I'm so much happier now that I have! They're not all for everybody!
What about black heals to tractor wheels!
I read it but I didn't love it… it was a painful read for me. I read it but I don't think I'd ever read it again…
I am reading school books…once that's over I will be back to reading for pleasure. Good luck with a new book!
Just finished The Other Boleyn Girl –Couldn't put it down! It's "forget to feed you family" good, I'm sure my family is happy I'm done with it!
Thank you!!! I thought I was the only book lover on the face of the earth who didn't like this one. I liked the circus details and the historical setting, but I just couldn't muster up any energy to care about the characters and the writing felt really flat to me. Good story, poorly written. Bah. I did finish it, but I wasn't happy about it. I just read Cutting for Stone — loved it! So, so good. I'm in the middle of One Day (David Nicholls) — funny, kinda tragic, drawn-out love story about two Brits. I like it. Other recent faves: The Forgotten Garden, The Kite Runner, and The Penderwicks (children's novel). Don't listen to me though, because I hated Book Thief too even though all my friends RAVE about it. Something's wrong with me 🙂
…oh, and I agree with Tanya — The Other Boleyn Girl is a fabulous read. Couldn't put it down. The movie is terrible, but the book is probably in my Top 20 of all time!
I just finished this book on Sunday. I actually liked it, but I can totally agree about the depressing "getting old" chapters. I'm dying to see how it translated on film 🙂
