DIY Chalkboard Mason Jars

I’m all about easy lately…..so naturally this project was right up my alley! Hudson is going to turn three in September, which means he will be starting pre-school! How did my baby grow up so fast? So, I decided to make his day-care teachers a few simple gifts. Every day he learns something new from them, so they have really been a blessing to our family!
All I did for this was grab a few mason jars and paint them with chalkboard paint! Super easy!

I used a Chalk Ink pen to write “thank you” on one side and “bloom” on the other. That way they can pick what side they want to display. It was my first time using Chalk Ink and it was SO easy to use. It went on like butter. I’m basically officially in love with this pen. I’ll never go back to regular chalk again! Where was this when I was doing my weekly chalkboards when I was pregnant with Hudson? I can’t wait to have some free time (am I kidding, will I ever have free time with TWO kids?) so that I can make some fun chalkboard signs with this pen!

Add in some flowers and call it good to go! This one was from our yard…..can’t wait to see more pretty things pop up in the next few weeks!

I love me some chalkboard paint! And chalk pens are the best! So much easier to draw with than chalk (and a lot prettier too!)

DIY Chalkboard Mason Jars

This week I combined two of my favorite things and it turned out perfect. Chalkboard paint + mason jars = LOVE.
File this under super cute project that’s also pretty easy.
 photo DSC_1820.jpg
First, pick up some wide mouth mason jars. I’ve seen these at Target and Walmart.

 photo DSC_1823.jpg
Tape off any areas you want kept clear and paint with chalkboard paint. I wasn’t sure what look I would like best so I started off with one entire jar painted in chalkboard paint and one jar with just the bottom painted. I ended up liking the half-painted one the best!

Make sure you use painters tape so that you get a nice clean line. I used 3 coats of paint on each jar.

This chalkboard paint is the best! I’ve been using it for over a year and there is still a ton left. This project probably would have been easier with spray chalkboard paint, but this is what I had on hand. I’ve found that the coverage of the real chalkboard paint is better than the spray paint version.
After your third coat carefully peel off the tape and let it dry for a few hours.

The decorate as you please! We planted some herbs in each jar for my sister-in-law and I used chalk to label the jars. A word of warning: it’s really hard to write on these jars with chalk. I did the “flowers” mason jar at the top of this post with a sliver sharpie and it was SO much easier. But I like that with the chalk you can change them up whenever you like!

And that’s it! I can’t wait to see them when they start to grow!

These turned out SO cute! I will definitely have to remember this little project! & I agree that spray paint probably would have been easier but, I don't like the way it goes on & dries. It seems to chip way too easily & that does not make me happy after all my time & effort spent!
