Today I thought it would be fun to share a day in the life of us! I love to do these from time to time just to give some insight in to our crazy days and help other moms feel less alone. I also think it’s so fun to go back and read these and watch how our days evolve over the years! This is a random Thursday in our life….and it also happens to be Valentine’s Day! All photos are taken on my iPhone (except for two!).
6:00 a.m. my alarm goes off and I get up, make some coffee, and try to squeeze in some work. I have a blog post draft due the next day that I need to finish up asap.
Belle usually sleeps until a little after 7:00 a.m., but today she is up at 6:30 screaming for me. I get her out of bed and she is happy as can be to have a surprise chocolate donut for Valentine’s Day breakfast! But I loose my blogging time. Such is the life of a work from home mom.
I set up the kid’s Valentine’s Day goodie baskets the day before, so they are all ready for them when they wake up!
While Belle eats, I quickly make a batch of green smoothies for everyone. You can find my recipe here.
Then I pack Hudson’s lunch. I’ve mentioned on my Instagram story before that he isn’t a big lunch eater. He’ll drink his green smoothie in the morning and have a snack. Then he has a snack at school and doesn’t eat much lunch. But of course he’s starving by the time he gets off the bus at the end of the day. We’re still working on figuring it all out. On days when I have time I try and pack Jon’s lunch too. I guess I didn’t today….sorry babe!
Things I’ve done that set us up for success in the morning include having Hudson empty his back pack when he gets home and hang up anything that is wet (usually it’s his snow pants, hat and gloves) and then I double check that his snow boots are dry. Because sometimes they aren’t. And if I forget to check, they stay wet until the next day and he doesn’t have snow boots to wear. I learned that lesson the hard way. I always check them the night before, and if they are wet I put them in the dryer on a drying rack so they don’t bang around. He has two pairs of gloves and snow pants, but only one pair of boots! So….all that to say, I make sure his back is packed and ready for the day, and that he has any papers he needs or books to return to school. I want him to be able to do this himself one day, and learn to be responsible for these items, but as a kindergartner it’s just not happening yet. He needs help or it doesn’t get done. We’re working on it!
7:05 a.m. and the big kid’s light turns green (read about that life changing gadget here), which means they can get up. They race downstairs and tear in to their Valentine’s Day stuff and bring it all to the living room. Everything was a big hit!
Then we have smoothies, watch a cartoon, and then it’s time to get dressed for school. Today is Thursday, which means Sadie doesn’t have school today….so I only need to get Hudson ready for now. Sadie LOVES going to the bus stop with Hudson, so we suit up and head out the door to walk across the street to our neighbor’s driveway to wait for the bus.
Bus stop shenanigans with Sadie right in the center of all the boys, as always. Lord help me when this girl gets older!
After the bus I quickly start a load of laundry.
Then the girls eat breakfast together while I do some dishes and sneak in a few more minutes of blog work.
Every other Thursday morning we go to my women’s small group….but we don’t have it this morning so it’s play play play!
While the girls destroy the house I sneak in about an hour of work….yay! I love this stage because the girls play so well together.
Around 10:30 Sadie and I get dressed for the day (dang my mirror is dirty!)….I’m taking her to Hudson’s class Valentine’s Day party and she is PUMPED. Thankfully Jon works from home on Thursdays, so he volunteers to have an early lunch with Belle and then put her down for a nap for me (around 11:30ish) so I don’t have to skip her nap to take her to the party.
11:30 we arrive at Hudson’s school just in time for the party. He’s pretty excited to see us and introduces Sadie to his friends. I just LOVE this age where he still runs up to give us both a big hug and kiss!
Sadie had so much fun doing all of the kindergarten crafts with Hudson. And Hudson was so sweet with her. Such a fun day!
After the party we said goodbye to Hudson and headed home for lunch.
When we get home I grab the monitor from Jon and find Belle playing quietly in her bed and NOT sleeping. She’s not crying so I leave her there while I make lunch for Sadie and myself.
1:00 Sadie has some quite time with the iPad while I clean up around the house, toss the laundry in the dryer (which, full disclosure, I totally forget about and it sits in the dryer until the next day), do the dishes from breakfast and lunch, pack Sadie’s bag for swim lessons later today, and apparently don’t take any photos.
At 1:30 p.m. I get Belle out of her crib (she never fell asleep, so I give up on her nap) get her dressed, feed her a snack, and then pack up the girls for some errands and Sadie’s swim lesson. It takes us forever to get out the door.
2:30 p.m. we head over to Costco to pick up some essentials…we love Costco!
I decide we have just enough time before Sadie’s swim lesson to run in to Trader Joe’s but Belle instantly falls asleep and I don’t have the heart to wake her.
But we are right by Chick fil A so we swing through the drive thru instead! Thursday afternoons/evenings are busy for us and it’s hard for me to make dinner, so I love to pick up something for the kids. We still have to go to swim lessons, so we will have to re-heat everything when we get home…but no one seems to mind! Sadie and I snack on a few waffle fries while I drive to swim lessons.
We get to swimming lessons a little early so there’s time to play…..but Sadie is very concerned about watching the teachers set up for afternoon lessons and has a million questions, ha! She takes lessons at Goldfish Swim School and I cannot recommend them enough! I typically need to be home by 4:00 each day to meet Hudson at the bus stop….but because Jon is home on Thursdays he is on bus duty.
4:00 Sadie starts her lesson and Belle plays and watches with me. She loves it!
After swimming we head home, eat dinner, and I quickly get the kids in the shower together and in to pjs. On Thursday evenings Jon and I attend a couples small group through our church, so my mom comes over to watch the kids and get them to bed. I try and have them all ready for her, to make it easier…because putting three kids to bed by yourself is no joke.
6:30 p.m. Jon and I head out the door….and take zero pictures the rest of the night. But we love our small group and have fun! Plus when we get home it’s after 9:00 and all kids are sleeping and it’s amazing! I clean up any remaining dishes, double check Hudson’s stuff for school the next day, take a shower, and head to bed! That’s it! I hope this gave you a little idea of what our days are like!
Everyday is busy. I don’t know how you manage but you do a great job!
