1. Any day now huh? Um, no. I have like two more months to go, thank you very much. Thanks for that boost of confidence. For the record, a man said this to me. I don’t think a mother would ever say this to a pregnant girl. And I never once got this comment during my first pregnancy. #SecondPregnancyProblems
2. I bet you’re hoping it’s a (insert whatever gender you don’t already have here) right? Who says this? Yes, I’m hoping it’s a girl, and if it’s not I’ll be sending it back. #SaidNoMomEver
3. If it’s not a (insert “preferred” gender here) you can always have another one. WHAT? Basing my family size on the gender of my unborn child is a fools game. I’d end up with enough boys to start my own baseball team if the plan was to keep going until we have a girl. If I want 4 kids, I’ll have 4 kids, regardless if they are all boys, all girls, or a mix match.
4. I hope you are getting lots of sleep now, because when that baby comes you’ll never sleep again. This just makes me laugh. Because it’s partially true, but should NEVER be said to a pregnant women. Why would you want to bring someone down by telling them that they will never sleep again? Sleep deprivation is a severe form of torture that all moms go through. I know I will sleep again, eventually, but why break a mom-to-be’s spirit? Let her discover this on her own. Especially don’t say this to a pregnant woman who has a 2 year old at home who also doesn’t sleep….she’s been there, done that. When a woman said this to me at the grocery store it was all I could do to no roll my eyes. Way to make motherhood sound horrible, lady.
5. Can I touch your belly? This needs no explanation. Unless you are my husband, my doctor, or I invite you to touch it, HANDS OFF THE BELLY.
6. I only gained 10 pounds when I was pregnant. Shut up. Go away. You are a unicorn and don’t really exist.
7. Wow, you’re so small/big/whatever. Unless you are saying, “wow, you’re so beautiful” zip it. So far with this pregnancy, I haven’t been told I’m so “big” but when I was pregnant with Hudson a few people told me I was small….and it upset me. It felt like they were implying that something was wrong with my baby. So unless you are commenting about how amazing the mom-to-be looks, keep your opinions to yourself.
What have people said to you when you were pregnant?
I am also pregnant with Baby #2 and I could not agree with this more. I don't mind women (friends and family) touching my belly though. Not strangers and NOT men unless you are my HUSBAND! Great List! I hear the you are too big now and it does hurt a bit. However, my weight gain is almost identical to my first pregnancy. And I will NOT let anyone make me feel bad about carrying a LIFE inside of me! Great post!
Haha! I can totally relate to these! I have 8 weeks left, and everyone keeps commenting about how big I look. THANKS! I didn't notice I was getting HUGE. I told someone we were having a girl, and they asked me if I was happy. Seriously? Most of these people are men or have never been pregnant…at least we can laugh it off (mostly). 🙂
Ugh, people are just sooo wrong sometimes. I'm not a mom to be yet, but I know better than to even THINK to ask any of these questions. Except if a friend of mine mentions a baby kick, then I ask if I can touch the belly to feel it. But I ALWAYS ask and it's always a good friend.
I completely agree! Thankfully I didn't really have too many of these comments when I was pregnant. I always hated when people wanted to touch my stomach though. Really, who comes up to someone else and touches them?!
Love this post!!! People are such idiots sometimes!!!
BEST POST EVER! 🙂 I can't even tell you how many of these I have heard – people seriously don't think!
I'm 22 weeks pregnant and went to the gym…the lady next to me on the treadmill told me I was so adorable pregnant and asked how far along I was. It seriously made my day…
I agree with all these!!!
Amen, sister! To all of these. Every time people hear that we are having a girl, they gush over it like it's the best thing ever – like we planned to have both a boy and a girl. And while I get that for a lot of people, one of each is ideal, we would have been JUST as happy with another sweet boy. After losing a baby right before this pregnancy, let me tell you, gender was the last thing I cared about – a healthy baby was our goal!
And, even though I feel like a house, people tell me that I look small (the cashier at Kroger's eyes bugged out of her head when I told her I was due in just 6 weeks and she said, "BUT YOU'RE SO LITTLE!") – and like you said, it freaks me out a little bit. Even though our girl is measuring ahead, I still don't like hearing that I look small (I guess I wouldn't like hearing that I look big either though). People just need to keep their thoughts – and hands – to themselves!
On a final note, I think a comment that was made to me when I was pregnant with Caleb takes the cake for all-time worst comments ever said to a pregnant woman. It started off okay with: "You are beautiful pregnant…" But quickly went downhill: "But your husband should be shot for doing that to your body." Seriously. I couldn't make that up. A client said that to me in the law office that I worked for. Could that be any creepier? Ruder? More terrible? Ugh.
I love this list and could add more to it too! A lot of my friends that say these things are single, so I have to remind myself that they just don't know what they are saying sometimes.
You can add "you're so close!" To the list. Because every single hour I was pregnant towards the end was torture!
My co-worker is 24 weeks pregnant and when a homeowner we work with asked her how far along she was yesterday, the woman replied "Wow, you are a GOOD 24 weeks!" Basically saying she was really big for 24 weeks. Shut up, lady!
Oh I constantly wanted to kill people who said dumb things when I was pregnant! You've nailed the most popular ones, a few others were comments regarding what they thought I was having based on how I was carrying. Like when I told a coworker I was having a girl and she said "oh yea, you can tell from behind", I guess implying my a$$ was getting bigger?? People!! : )
When I was pregnant, with my now 11 month old twins, I didn't like the comment, "better you than me."
"Hang in there" or "It's worth it in the end".. well DUH, but it's also pretty dang miserable up until that point too.
I couldn't agree with these more!!! All so true… I am pregnant with my first, due in July. I work with all men and early on before I was really even showing I got "oh your pregnant, are you excited?" ….. & "are you sure there aren't two in there?"…… Seriously!?! Word to the wise men, stick with "you look beautiful." ALWAYS 🙂
You are spot on!!! I swear people feel compelled to hound you when youre pregnant, and it doesnt get much better once baby arrives, either! The nerve, am I right?! You DO look wonderful!
Agreed on all accounts! I just sent this post to about half a dozen of my pregnant friends and we have all had one of these things said to us and we hated it!
I LOVE each and every one of these! Yep let me just save up all of my sleep in a "sleep bank…" Next edition will have to be "7 things to not say to a postpartum woman!"
The sleep one drove me crazy!!! Um, hello, I'm already sleeping like crap, thanks! I had two men at my church tell me that I looked like I was bigger than the other pregnant gal whose due date was a month ahead of mine. Such a confidence booster!
I have three girls and I constantly get asked "are you going to try for a boy?" This started while I was still pregnant with #3! (and the answer is NO!!!)
Nurse Bee
For me, the thing that bothered me the most was the people constantly checking on our status the last couple weeks. "Is she here yet? Is she here yet?" #1 – If I birthed my baby and wanted you to know, you'd know. And #2 – No, I am still very pregnant, thank you.
When I was 30-some weeks pregnant, a gentleman who worked with my husband (and was a complete stranger to me) said "I feel bad just looking at you."
What do you say to that?!
These are all SO TRUE! 🙂
Haha you're a unicorn and you don't exist. That's hilarious. I was constantly told I was small with my son and I hated it. I heard "your baby is small" but there was nothing I could do about that!
Couldn't agree more with you! I'm 29 weeks with #2 and I feel like all I hear anymore is how huge and big I am! The worst two comments have been your weren't this big with Estella and my boss told me two weeks ago I looked like I was due any day:( Most of theses comments have been from women too… apparently they forgot what its like to have been pregnant!
Haha! When my younger sister had her baby, she was almost in tears, and wanted to know why nobody warned her that she wouldn't get any sleep.
The worst thing I've heard, is when a friend of mine was expecting her 3rd daughter and somebody asked if the baby was a boy or girl and she smiled and said girl, and this person looked at her and said, "I'm sorry, maybe the next one will be a boy".
I don't know what people are thinking sometimes. 😉
Oh my gosh yes! All of these when I was pregnant with Mason. Seriously people. And most from other MOTHERS. Would you like it if I said that to you? No.
And it only got worse after Mason was born. One day I was at Target getting a prescription filled (probably birth control ha!) and he was crying. I was paying and some RANDOM lady walked over and put his pacifier in his mouth and said something like "you looked busy" EXCUSE ME??? Do not touch my child stranger. Crazy!
Oh girl I love this. "You're a unicorn. You don't exist." Seriously LOL'd at my desk. Sooo true. And the touching of the belly really got to me. You didn't want to touch my stomach when I wasn't pregnant, why do you want to now?
Girl you nailed it with this post!! Haha I love "you're a unicorn, go away" HAH! for the record it's not even healthy to only gain 10 lbs when pregnant. I try to be VERY aware of the things I say, of course I'm sure I mess up sometimes and say insensitive things without meaning to.. but seriously, I feel like the moms that say these things are the ones living in a cloud of sprinkles and rainbows 😉
Scheduled to share tomorrow 🙂 xo
Oh I wish it were not true, but between my 2 pregnancies I've had all of these said to me! And sometimes, people (strangers!) did not ask to touch the bump, they just helped themselves! I think the only appropriate thing to say to a pregnant woman is "You look beautiful!" or some variation thereof.
I love this list! Seriously!!! I don't know what people are thinking saying some of these things! I try to be conscious of what I say around people so hopefully I'm not insensitive!! And the worst is when people don't even ASK to touch the belly. First, if I wasn't pregnant, you wouldn't ask. Why is it now ok??? So bizzare!!!
This is too funny bc I've had this conversation twice already this week… The audacity & stupidity of people really shocks me! It's like people forgot the manners they were taught when they were 5!! I had people say to me "Wow! You're still pregnant!?" "When are you gonna have that baby!?" I just wanted to punch people!! Lol!
I honestly didn't care about those comments. If ppl wanted to say I looked fat, they said it and I liked their honesty. I enjoyed being pregnant. Ella
A great post – and all so true!! x
YES!!! Oh, these took me back. Someone told me every single one of these lines. Even a mom (granted she was probably already a grandma in her senile state) told me, "Any day now, huh?" And when I told her no, I had three months left, she looked at me with disgust and said, "Are you sure you're not having twins?" Bkajdlfhdofuay! That was my exact response. It is not a typo. Lol. Love this post so much. 🙂 This should be sent all to all humans and even all the unicorns.
