Thinking about the potty….

potty time

This week Hudson asked to do something I never in a million years expected him to ask. He asked to sit on the potty. WHAT?!?! After I picked myself off the floor from shock, I agreed and sat his tiny little buns on the toilet. Of course nothing happened, but he was so proud of himself for hovering in my arms sitting up there like a big boy. Needless to say, my potty research started later that night! We have zero plans to even start potty training any time soon…but it never hurts to have supplies on hand just in case the day comes a little sooner than we anticipated.
I’ve heard from a lot of friends that their child preferred to sit on a potty seat on the toilet rather than a mini potty so I bought two types of seats and we’ll see which one he likes best when the day actually comes. And cleaning out a mini potty sounds totally gross, so I’m happy to skip that purchase! I also picked up a few books to help introduce the idea of using the potty to Hudson. He loves books so I’m sure he’ll love these.
Not gonna lie, picking out cute undies for Hudson is totally something I’m kind of looking forward to. I’ve heard good things about Gap’s undies, but when Hudson acts like he might be ready I’ll let him pick out his own big boy undies. I’m also brainstorming some fun goodies to reward Hudson for using the potty. This little boy is motivated by cars so fingers crossed these treats work. And m&ms. I’m totally a believer in the power of the m&m.

I also picked up some flushable wipes and Pull-Ups…..which as soon as Hudson saw them he insisted on putting them on. He looked like such a big boy. These Pull-Ups have Jake and the Neverland Pirates on them and he kept saying “Jake!” “Jake!” and was so excited.

And then he spotted the Buzz Lightyear pair and it was all over. He had to put the Buzz pair on. When did my baby get so big?

Can we stop and have a moment of silence for those thighs? Oh my word. They kill me.

I went ahead and enrolled Hudson in the Big Kid Academy (cue the tears!) to help prep both of us for the potty training adventure that awaits! I was really impressed with the amount of information and ideas on the site. There are a ton of helpful tips and strategies for getting started and info about how to know when your child is ready to potty train. I highly recommend checking it out if potty training is in your future! The Big Kid Academy site also gave me lots of cute ideas to help make potty training fun when the big days comes, like celebrating Hudson’s first flush, creating a potty chart, and bustin’ a move to our favorite tunes to celebrate Hudson using the potty. It almost makes me excited to start training. Almost.

So, even though I have a few more months before we start potty training I would LOVE to hear your tips and tricks! I’ll take any help I can get!

And oh my word, when this boy discovers his Pull-Ups glow in the dark he is going to freak out. I’ll keep that little tid-bit in my back pocket until I really need to wow him!

Look how cute the Pull-Ups are. I still can’t believe we are at this stage so soon! And don’t forget to enroll in the Big Kid Academy!

Many thanks to Pull-Ups for sponsoring today’s story and creating the Big Kid Academy for us soon-to-be potty trainers.

I was anticipating this huge deal when it came to potty training. My girl, no biggie. No diaper no accidents. She's a smart cookie that one. Went from diapers all day every day to no diapers in the house (in her size at least). It was a breeze. We did it right at her second birthday. I do think daycare helped some sseeing the bigger kids use the potty on the regular.

Good luck with the potty training!! We used a mini one and cleaning it out was gross…but we were able to keep it in the living room at the beginning of potty training to constantly remind our son to use the potty instead of having an accident. This proved to be very successful and we no longer use it.

I have so many friends unsuccessfully potty training right now… And I keep telling them- read the 3 day book! If anything it gives you a good dose of confidence (which I swear kids pick up on!). You just kinda end with the feeling that your kid CAN and WILL rock the potty πŸ™‚

Caleb is not quite a year and a half yet, so we have a little while before we think about potty training… But honestly, I'm already dreading it a bit. Heading over to check out that site and see what I need to do to prepare in the coming months. PS: Totally with you on avoiding the mini potty at all costs. Yuck. The seat sounds so much more hygienic. Let's hope our boys agree.

Awesome!! Loving all your research and I too totally have potty training on the brain!! My 17 month old has been telling me every time he has to "poo" – so while I feel it's way too early, it's also made me think about getting prepared!

I sincerely hope potty training goes better for you than it has for us!!! Kenley showed all the interest in excitement in the world and NADA! But she is also a piece of work – so hopefully Hudson makes it easy on mama! Good luck lady! πŸ™‚

I think that Pirate Potty book needs to be ours! And I've been hunting for some car or train undies…they are hard to come by!

Keep sharing any tips. Charlie asked me to go the other day and then flat out went on his own potty. Kind of shocked. I'm guessing it'll be another 6 months before we have success, but I guess you never know. Our Pediatrician told us to start training and his daycare is also starting sooner than we thought he'd be ready for. Good luck to you and Hudson and agree on cleaning a little one. Any tips appreciated!!

I hate to say it, but I've had absolutely no luck potty training with pull-ups. They are great for when you are out and about, naps and night time (my 3 year old still wears them at night), but the kids don't always know when they go. what I've learned is using a pair of cotton training pants and then a pair of plastic training pants over them. So they go and are aware and (usually) the plastic pants keep it contained.

My other suggestion is wait until the kid is ready. My oldest I kind of pushed at her first sign of interest…and it took 6 months. My second one, I waited until I was sure she was ready and it took about a month. Anyway you do it, it's hard work! Good luck!

We are in the middle of potty training Xavier, and when I say we I mean daycare πŸ™‚ X was interested in the potty around 2yo as well, but I didn't force it. He ended up not wanting anything to do with it until recently. Looking forward to no more diapers, but nervous about long trips and such! It would be great if he was fully trained by the time he turns 3 in December…he gets to start preschool then πŸ™‚ Good luck! And if anything special works I will let you know!
